Traditional Woodcarving
Master Mitsuaki Yokoya
Mitsuaki Yokoya was born in 1952 to a family of woodcarvers who made decorations for the Buddhist temple Asakusa in Tokyo. As the third generation of woodcarvers, Yokoya inherited the carver title Soshu III. Before becoming Soshu III, Mitsuaki Yokoya held apprenticeships under four masters of Buddhist art carving and sculpture design. He now provides not only commission works of Buddhist art and decoration, but also restoration works. Along with this work, Master Yokoya holds art exhibitions nationally with other handcraft artists in Japan, and in 2016 he participated in the cultural exchange exhibition in Chicago. |
